Pilates
is a non-aerobic form of exercise that focuses on strengthening the core
postural muscles, keeping the body balanced and centered, and the spine neutrally
aligned. It was devised in
the 1920s by physical trainer Joseph Pilates as a way to help injured
athletes and dancers safely return to exercise and maintain their
fitness. It has since been
adapted to address the general fitness needs of people in the community
with additional, wide-ranging benefits. The
American Council on Exercise states, “Pilates has a long list of
benefits, including improving body mechanics, balance, coordination,
strength, and flexibility.” Dr.
Cedric Bryant, ACE chief exercise physiologist, notes that it is “a
valuable addition to any exercise routine offering the essential
elements of building a strong core and increasing flexibility[1].” The Mayo Clinic reports, “Pilates, an exercise technique that emphasizes muscle balance, proper posture, and body alignment, can improve your back health.[2]” Paul Takahashi, M.D., Mayo Clinic geriatrician, adds that pilates is an “excellent program for older adults…Potential benefits include:
Pilates is used for safe rehabilitation of joint and spinal injuries, as well as for promoting injury prevention with the improved coordination, balance, dynamic stability, and body awareness resulting from the practice.
